Mountain Resort Koh Lipe : So beautiful, it could be sensational!”
It's not as bad as it has been painted....
We set off for Koh Lipe and The Mountain Resort with some trepidation after reading all the reviews and forum posts on Tripadvisor, but we’d booked and paid for our 6 night stay months ago, so we were committed.
Being over fifty and not the fittest specimens in the gym, we were a little apprehensive about having to haul our heavy bags all the way up the steps to the resort but we were pleasantly surprised, when the Sunday ferry from Pak Barra reversed itself onto Sunrise Beach, to be met by a representative from The Mountain Resort and two bearers, who gathered up our luggage and set off through the trees to the resort. It pays to phone ahead to let them know you are on the way, it would seem! The picturesque steep wooden steps you see in photographs have now been replaced by two even steeper sets of concrete steps with tiled tops (very slippery when wet) and as we clambered up them, the size of the tip for bearers quickly doubled!
On arrival, we were given a cold drink and quickly conducted to our accommodation, front row Deluxe, beautiful view as promised but I agree with other posts about the furniture. Think ‘island rustic’ meets motel, with nasty nylon curtains and a plastic headboard. Still, I wasn’t planning to spend much waking time in there and the bed was comfortable enough. The air-con was efficient and the bathroom perfectly functional although I have no idea why they think they need such a huge TV in the rooms.
The restaurant is like a huge barn but the food is acceptable. The breakfast buffet offered cereal (one choice), fruit, yoghourt, eggs, fried or scrambled and usually cold, some choice of potato or vegetable, French toast or rather good pancakes, bread and traditional Thai breakfast but no choice of pastries, meats or cheeses which disappointed some European visitors. There was no fresh fruit juice either (just an orange flavoured drink), which disappointed me, but there was plenty of fresh, cold water, and hot water for tea and coffee. The restaurant staff were quite reserved at first, but became friendlier after we had been there for a day or two and they got to recognise us, however I do question the appropriateness of a table in the middle of the restaurant for staff to lounge at, reading magazines, when there were no tables to clear.
Another downside is the total lack of any kind of ‘housekeeping’. We were there for 6 nights but my bungalow was never cleaned. I can cope with using the same bed-linen for 6 nights but I would have appreciated a clean, dry towel, my bin being emptied and a refill of toilet paper!
The location is, as many have said, fantastic. The picture postcard view across the white sand and azure sea cannot be equalled anywhere on the island. It’s by far and away the nicest, cleanest beach and rarely has more than a dozen or so people on it. You can snorkel straight from the beach and there are lots of colourful fish to see. Be warned though, there is absolutely no shade anywhere on the beach, at any time of the day and with the sun reflecting off the sand it’s very easy to burn. The beach is also home to the popular ‘Karma bar’ and ‘Mountain Massage’ where you can get one of the best massages on the island and certainly one in the nicest venue. However, three new Deluxe cabins have recently been built on the beach, which would save the occupants from having to climb up and down the steps other than for breakfast, but which do detract from the appearance of the beach.
All in all, I am glad we went. I’m pleased to have seen this beautiful spot and I enjoyed the experience, but I’m not going back until somebody puts a few sun shades on the beach!
Mountain Resort Koh Lipe : Amazing location, average resort
I'm just repeating what has been said in the several reviews before this one. We paid 1600 for a basic hut with air con and cold water. I thought this was quite pricey for a very small bungalow. We were really disappointed with the food here - walk around the beach to the right, go past the village, and there is a restaurant on the beach (5-10 mins) which is excellent and much cheaper.
The view is AMAZING and the beach is lovely. Other areas of the island are covered in litter but this beach was always clean. To be honest, the negatives above are completely outweighed by the view, and if you don't stay here, then you should definitely visit just to have a look around. My best scenic photos from the holiday were taken here.
Mountain Resort Koh Lipe : Average room & service but awesome view & location!”
I chose Mountain Resort needless to say was due to their fantastic location and the "to die for" view :) As I'm always a sucker for more secluded locations when I travel, a bit further away from the crowd is always a better bet for me and my bestie. MR delivers just that. It's much more quiet comparing to the neighboring beaches namely Sunset,Sunrise or Pattaya beach (the noisiest and most crowded). I paid THB1100/night for a fan room with cold water shower. It's kinda pricey, when we first booked and was told it's gonna be THB600 initially from an agent in Langkawi. Oh well, we didn't question much as we really liked the place and we're only there for 2 nights. Service was slow, unfriendly and cold as mentioned by other travelers. But I didn't expect much anyway from them, since we chose the place mainly for its location. But not to an extent that they're rude, we didn't experience rudeness throughout our stay at MR.
Room is really basic, it is all indivual huts, and don't expect anything fancy at all. The non air conditioned rooms are adequate if you don't mind the heat in the afternoon, but then you'll always be outdoors anyway not in the room. The VIP suites has nicer locations, closer to the beach with nice sea views. While the rest are located up a tiny hill/slope, and be warned, you need to do a lot of climbing..from the beach to the restaurant, you'll have to climb quite a number of steps up..and from the restaurant to the chalets, again more walking up the slopes. But I actually liked it that way, it made the whole experience more rustic and back to nature. I do agree with others, I didn't see any housekeeping done at all, although we were only there for 2 nights. Which is weird.
The spa next to Karma bar seemed to offer a pretty good deal for only THB300 per hour. I've seen higher prices at the main town area or the same price, but you won't get the by the beach experience you'll get at MR beach spa. Karma bar is my fave spot in the whole island :) Ben the bartender is awesome, a very nice chap. Timothy that runs the bar is a nice guy too, they serve pretty wicked cocktails day and night. Don't forget to check with them when will they perform the fireshow by the beach at night, it was awesome..great beats, cool bar, friendly staffs. Be warned for ppl who doesn't like dogs..there's quite a few "resident" doggies around Karma bar area, by the beach. I fell in love with them, but for some that disliked them, please just leave them alone and ignore them. They're super friendly and warm, when you greet and play with them.
Take note, if you arrive at Pattaya beach (that's the main pick up/drop off point) you can either choose to walk to MR or take the longtail boat that'll cost you THB50. We chose to walk, as from the stroll we could check out the whole island on foot and get to see the other beaches, resorts and local villages as well, sort of familiarising ourselves in a way. And yes, the beaches are quite dirty at many stretches, we've picked up so many broken pieces of glasses since day one, and discarded it properly. Always make sure you're wearing your flip flops. I wondered if the rubbish was caused by tsunami and was never properly cleaned up ever since? However I did notice that MR hired ladies to clean up the beach area everyday, which is definitely a good thing.
And bear in mind, the whole island is without electricity most of the time so remember to bring a torchlight with you when you walk out at night. It's pitch black and to walk back to MR from the main town area is gonna take you about 15-20 mins, so you'll definitely appreciate having a torchlight with you :D
Koh Lipe is such a gorgeous island, so laidback and rustic..I am hoping to see the same environment next year (planning to revisit) but I doubt so..as it's getting more and more well known, and as more tourists swarmed into the island, the more commercialised it'll get, sadly. At least I've seen Lipe in its more original state. Just sad that many travellers were irresponsible and litter so ignorantly in this beautiful island..
Mountain Resort Koh Lipe : Amazing Views from our Bungalow at Mountain Resort, Koh Lipe”
I can not believe that I could not find Koh Lipe here at Trip Advisor, I had to guess and place my map pin myself on my travel map.
Koh Lipe is a beautiful Island in the very south of Thailand, its not easy to get to, and most places there are closed half of the year, making the island private and only accessible only half of the year. We stayed at the Mountain Resort, reccommened from some searches on travel blogs. The resort is big, has alot of choices in bungalows, the pricer ones with the better views, and having aircondtioning, which you really dont need, since they are only open from nov- may, and its not that hot on the island during that time. We stayed in the cheapest bungalow, it was 600 baht a night, about $18 US dollars, it was a great deal, some of the other bungalows right on the beach charged alot more, and our was better! The resort is on top of a hill, and there is a pretty long staircase to reach the top, so you have to be in half way decent shape to make it to the top, but its worth it! The view up there is priceless, and the restaurant is great with the views to die for at every table, great food too! Prices are great too, service a lttle off, but hey, its thailand, and that is just the way it is. Our bungalow, was clean, and had a attached bathroom , with cold water only, and only a fan, both were just fine, the bungalow had window slats that opened and let in a great breeze, and there is a bug net over the bed, but there were no misqistos that time of year when we were there, The bungalows had nice little deck with chairs, so you could sit outside, i think you have to request a bungalow that is closer to the view, but i dont think you can ask for that in advance, you just have to ask for a closer one once you get there. Koh Lipe is accessible from koh lanta by boat during season, ( but a long day journey) and by taking a 2 hour boat ride from Langkawi , Malaysia, which is what we did. Koh lipe has the most beautiful water, it looks alot like Phi Phi , thailand, but doesnt have the overdevelopment, but go quick! I think that will change, its becoming very popular, but still has that local, quiet charm, no cars, only long tail boats, and you can walk the island in 2 1/2 hours. We loved it, and loved this resort, there is a cute bar called Karma, which is right on the beach, below the resort, and the beaches are amazing, white sand, and turqouise blue water, the beach has this amazing sandbar that you can walk out far on, great place!
Liked — location, best beach on the island
Disliked — staff could of been more friendly, communication was hard
